Planet X (a.k.a. Vulcan, Niburu)
There seems to be 2 main branches to this theory:
The first is due to astronomers hunting for a planet that was disturbing the orbits of the outer planets, mainly Uranus. This led to the discovery of Neptune - but Neptune was not responsible for the orbital deviations. This does remain a mystery. Even recently, it was announced that the Pioneer probes are slightly off their predicted positions.
A recent (Dec. 2002) New Scientist article says astronomers suspect there is a quite large planet a very long way out that has swept all the smaller objects out from a region of the kuiper belt:

The other branch of the theory derives from legends of a planet that comes by the earth every 3,600 years and may have caused destruction in 1603 BC. This object would have a highly elliptical orbit. There are quite a few websites predicting it will come by us again in 2003 causing massive upheavals. (Some links below)
I do think there may be a massive
object in a long period orbit around the Sun and it is also possible that it
might cause comets to fall towards us from time to time. This would fit with
Plato's report of the Egyptian
knowledge.
There are quite a few problems with
the 2003 theory. A planet on an eccentric orbit would be bound to disturb the
orbits of the other planets, and the Earth, whereas all the planetary orbits
are surprisingly circular and orderly.
Although 3,600 years is a long time it is not so far back that there wouldn't
be many reports and observations. The Chinese and Egyptians should have good
records of it. Movements of planets were always regarded as particularly significant
- if there was one that arrived in the sky every 3,600 years I think it would
be a well known legend most cultures - in the same way that the flood is remembered.
Zecharia Sitchin in his book "The 12th Planet" makes a very good case for the Sumerians, 5,000 years ago, being in possession of advanced knowledge about the solar sysytem. They were aware of all the planets that we are and they knew correctly that the earth/moon system is the result of a collision between 2 planets - this is recent new knowledge only worked out in the last 20 years. There are a few details that the Sumerians knew that may be true but are well beyond our present knowledge. The Sumerians say a planet formed in the outer regions but fell in towards the Sun. On the way it just missed Saturn and sent one of Saturn's moons (Pluto) into it's present orbit. This is interesting because astronomers do suspect that Pluto was originally a moon of another planet or perhaps a giant kuiper belt object. It will be a long time before it will be known for certain what the origin of Pluto is - no planned space missions will get that kind of detailed evidence. After just missing Saturn this 12th planet carried on to collide with a planet between Mars and Jupiter. All that remains there now is the asteroid belt. The result of the collision was that one load of debris formed the Earth and Moon in a new orbit closer to the Sun and the remains of the 12th planet was put into a long orbit at right angles to the other planets which crosses through the asteroid belt at its closest approach. It is possibly a correct theory but still beyond our present knowledge to prove or disprove. The 3,600 orbital period is inferred by Sitchin from the ancient king lists - which all contain multiples of 3,600 for the lengths of reigns. This is more likely to be due to the Sumerians using a 60 based numbering sysytem and their regarding 60 x 60 as a divine number. This numbering still survives in minutes and seconds. 3,600 is therefore the number of seconds in 1 hour. There is no direct evidence in the ancient texts for a time period for the orbit. The other factor that is important here is that an orbit that is further out than Mars does not pose a threat to life on Earth.
There doesn't seem to be any compelling
evidence that it was here in 1603 BC or that it has a period of exactly 3,600
years. There are some reports; but I would expect more evidence than I have
seen so far.
At the time of writing (late 2002) I would expect it to be easily visible with
the naked eye by now if it is going to arrive for next year. If it is traveling
at an orbital velocity then by now it should be no further away than Saturn.
There is an article by an astronomer on the Boston
Globe Online website - he calculates that it should be one of the brightest
objects in the sky by now (2002) if it is going to get here next year.
So I don't expect any Planet X troubles in 2003 but it might be responsible
for disturbing comets or asteroids that may hit us in a few years time.
I also found there is a Bible Code about Planet X - I have included it at the
bottom of the page .

Times website.

My favourite online source for this
is the Vulcan website. The prediction
here is that comet swarms fall towards the Sun periodically due to Planet X,
named Vulcan on this site, and that the next swarm is likely to hit us around
2006 or 2007.
